What is a Nanny?

When you are at work, a nanny gives your child personal, nurturing care in the familiar surroundings of your home.

By Gate Beautiful

For many working mothers in Zambia, leaving a child in someone else’s care is not an easy decision. You need more than someone who simply watches your child. You need someone who will keep your child safe, understand their routine and respond to their needs with patience and care. A nanny’s main responsibility is caring for your child. Because she provides one-to-one care in your home, she can learn your child’s personality, habits, likes and dislikes. She can also follow the routines and values that matter to your family. Depending on your child’s age, a nanny may prepare meals, supportand feeding and sleeping routines, help with bathing and dressing, supervise play, read stories and encourage learning. She also provides comfort, affection and reassurance while you are away. A nanny is different from a general domestic worker because her main responsibility is the child’s care and well-being. She works in partnership with you, respects your parenting choices and keeps you informed about your child’s day. For a working mother, the right nanny brings peace of mind. You can focus on your work knowing that your child is being safely and lovingly cared for at home.
